Firstly, I want to say that there are many beautiful places in El Salvador, but to keep on the route that we were traveling and also to keep as safe as possible - we only stopped in El Salvador for 5 days and stayed all this time in one place - near El Tunco - right next to the ocean in Pelicano surf camp. When going to El Salvador - we had heard it all - how unsafe it s, how big of a problem is human trafficking, kidnapping, robberies etc., so we planned to stay just for 3 days, so we would not have to take a 14 hour bus, but could split the traveling in 2 days. Firstly, I have to say, do not be afraid to travel around El Salvador, of course, stay safe, do not go out after dark alone, but in general it is beautiful and safe. Now, if I could do it again - I would travel much more around the country, but, even though we are not on a strict timeline - it is always impossible to see everything.
If you have not noticed yet - I love to eat and one of the most important things on trips for me is food. El Salavador has one of the best foods in Central America - pupusas. In El Salvador, it has been declared the national dish, usually stuffed with one or more ingredients, which may include cheese, squash, mushroom or beans. It comes with a spicy cabbage slaw and tomato salsa. My favorite ones were stuffed with jalapeno cheese. Usually you can get pupusa for 50cents to a dollar and I needed 3 to be full.
Pelicano surf camp is an amazing place to stay even if surfing is not your thing, I have to add though that is not for comfort seeking people. Dorms are around 15$ and privates for 27$, but rpivate room does not mean that there is a door that you can lock. Beds were amazing, but chargers only in common space, although, as the place felt super safe- everybody just left their phones there. The place had around 20 chickens, 6 dogs, 3 kittens and a rooster. And you know what happens when there is a rooster- wake up call is guaranteed. There was one chicken that went to our dorm room every single morning, got into bed and laid an egg - nice, fresh egg for breakfast. All the animals were amazingly sweet, but the best part of the place were the owners - a man who loves to surf and does it every day, also a very good teacher and his wife who makes amazing food every day.
We had tried surfing before, so we kinda new the basics and opted for just renting the boards instead of having lesson. 10 minutes in I see Vidar walking out of water with his face completely covered in blood. While trying to get on board, he got pulled under a wave and the spur of the board just went through his nose. This lead us to discover that hospitals here are free, even the medicine. And scars are also free. Next day I took a surfing lesson instead of doing it on my own.
Also, if you want to stay here, but do other touristy things- they do offer tours to main of them.
And we are very happy to have made that stop after 8 hours of bus ride, cause the next leg took 12 hours on its own.
